A Courtyard House

A Courtyard House sets out to bring the garden inside, and takes its brief almost literally: a house and garden its owners intend to live in their whole life. A loose nine-square grid breaks the ground into four quadrants, each answering its own light, outlook and roof, held together by a kitchen at the centre and paired throughout with an equivalent piece of outdoor room.
The whole site is detailed for wheelchair access, all roof space given over to solar, gas disconnected entirely — a house arranged to hold difference together without flattening it. Photography by Ben Hosking.
